On Friday, American Express (Amex) announced the revamp of two of its personal credit cards in the Hilton portfolio. For those who may have missed out on the changes, you can refer to my previous post for more details. Additionally, Amex also introduced higher than usual welcome bonuses on the revamped cards. Furthermore, Amex is currently running a fantastic welcome bonus of 150,000 bonus points on the Business Platinum card as well.
One card that I have personally carried in my wallet for many years now is the Amex Gold Card. I have been with this card since it had a $95 annual fee. Over the years, Amex has gradually increased the annual fee, but they have also added new benefits and rebates. Currently, Amex is offering a welcome bonus of 75,000 Membership Rewards points on the Amex Gold Card.
Amex Gold Card: 75,000 Membership Rewards Points
With this offer on the Amex Gold Card, you will earn a welcome bonus of 75,000 Membership Rewards points after you spend $6,000 in the first 6 months of card membership. It is important to note that this card carries an annual fee of $250. However, the card is loaded with some really good credits and opportunities to earn membership rewards points.
Earning Membership Rewards Points
To kickstart your points earning, the Amex Gold Card offers bonus points in the following categories:
1. 4x Membership Rewards points for every dollar you spend at restaurants worldwide (including takeout and delivery in the U.S) and on groceries in the U.S (capped at $25,000 per year).
2. 3x Membership Rewards points for every dollar you spend on flights (directly booking with the airline) or with AmexTravel.com.
3. 1x Membership Rewards points for every dollar you spend on all other purchases.
Credits
In addition to the bonus points earned in the above categories, the Amex Gold Card also offers the following credits each year:
1. $10 in Uber cash each month, which can be used for rides or with Uber Eats ($120 per year).
2. $10 dining credits per month ($120 per year) when you use your Amex Gold card at one of the following merchants: Grubhub, The Cheesecake Factory, Goldbelly, Wine.com, Milk Bar, and Shake Shack.
Overall, this card is a great fit for people who primarily spend in three categories: airlines, dining, and groceries. The points accumulate quickly, and if you max out the grocery category, you can earn an additional 100,000 Membership Rewards points in a single year! American Express Membership Rewards points are an extremely valuable points currency and offer the widest array of airline transfer partners compared to their peers. Additionally, the points transfer bonuses that Amex occasionally runs are the icing on the cake.
My favorite use of Amex’s Membership Rewards points is by transferring them to Air Canada Aeroplan and flying their partner airlines worldwide, such as Emirates, Singapore Airlines, or Air Vistara. What about you? What is your favorite use of Amex’s Membership Rewards points? Share your thoughts in the comments section.
