Amex is targeting select business card holders for new spending bonuses

American Express has recently launched a new targeted spending bonus offer for holders of its business cards. While there may be different versions of this offer available, the one I have seen offers an additional 2,500 Membership Rewards points for spending a minimum of $10,000+ in qualifying purchases within 90 days. Here are some key details and terms of the offer:

– Enrollment is limited.
– The offer must be added to the eligible card and used for redemption.
– Once added, cardholders have 90 days to meet the spending requirement.
– American Express Corporate Cards, Prepaid card products, and Cards issued outside the United States are not eligible.
– Only one enrolled Card is allowed per Card Member across all American Express offer channels.
– The offer only extends to the enrolled Card and not to any other linked cards.
– A “qualifying purchase” refers to a purchase made with the enrolled Card within 90 days of saving the offer.
– Each time the spending requirement is met, cardholders will receive an additional 2,500 Membership Rewards points, up to three times.
– The offer is only valid for purchases made in US dollars.
– Cash advances, fees, charges, and foreign currency conversion fees are not eligible transactions.
– Additional points will be credited to the Membership Rewards program account within 90 days after the offer end date.
– Only one enrolled Card is allowed per American Express Card online account.

It is worth noting that the offer end date is December 31, 2024, so cardholders have ample time to add the offer to their targeted card. However, it is recommended to add the offer only when certain that the spending target can be met within the following 90 days.

While the offer provides an added incentive, it may not be as generous as some cardholders would hope. Based on a value of 1.5 cents per Membership Rewards point, the additional points earned from this offer are equivalent to just $37.50 for $10,000 of spending (up to three times). This spending target may be challenging for some cardholders, especially if the card is primarily used for unbonused spending.

In the past, American Express has offered similar targeted spending bonus offers with varying terms. Some examples include spending $1,500+ to earn 1,000 Membership Reward points (up to three times) or spending $9,500+ to earn 5,000 Membership Reward points (up to three times). These offers should be considered as nice bonuses if the spending target can be met organically without diverting spending from cards that offer a better rate of return.

In conclusion, American Express is targeting holders of select business cards with offers to earn bonus points for hitting preset spending targets within 90 days. While the offer may not be lucrative enough for some cardholders to justify additional spending, those who can meet the target through organic spending will likely find the extra points to be a welcome bonus. If you have been targeted for a similar offer, feel free to share your experience in the comments.
