Late last year, American Express (Amex) made some changes to two of its personal credit cards in the Hilton portfolio. These changes included revamping the cards and introducing higher welcome bonuses. One of the cards that received an update was the Amex Gold Card, which I have personally held for many years. In this article, I will discuss the new welcome bonus on the Amex Gold Card and the benefits it offers.

The current welcome bonus on the Amex Gold Card is 90,000 Membership Rewards points. To earn this bonus, you need to spend $6,000 within the first six months of card membership. The card does come with an annual fee of $250, but it offers various credits and opportunities to earn Membership Rewards points.

If you’re interested in applying for the 90,000 points offer, I recommend clearing your browsing history and cookies before clicking on the application link. In some cases, using a different browser or a VPN service can also help access the elevated offer. I was able to see the offer using a referral link with the Safari browser on a MacBook.

When it comes to earning Membership Rewards points with the Amex Gold Card, you can earn bonus points in several categories. You’ll earn 4x points for each dollar spent at restaurants worldwide, including takeout and delivery in the U.S. You’ll also earn 4x points on groceries in the U.S., with a cap of $25,000 per year. Additionally, you’ll earn 3x points for each dollar spent on flights (directly booking with the airline) or with AmexTravel.com. All other purchases will earn you 1x point per dollar.

In addition to bonus points, the Amex Gold Card offers credits that can help offset the annual fee. Cardholders receive $10 in Uber cash each month, which can be used for rides or with Uber Eats, totaling $120 per year. There are also $10 dining credits per month ($120 per year) available when using the card at select merchants like Grubhub, The Cheesecake Factory, Goldbelly, Wine.com, Milk Bar, and Shake Shack.

Overall, the Amex Gold Card is a great choice for individuals who spend primarily in the categories of airlines, dining, and groceries. The points can accumulate quickly, and by maxing out the grocery category alone, you can earn an additional 100,000 Membership Rewards points in a single year.

American Express Membership Rewards points are highly valuable and offer a wide range of airline transfer partners compared to other credit card rewards programs. Additionally, Amex occasionally offers transfer bonuses, making these points even more valuable. My personal favorite use of Amex Membership Rewards points is transferring them to Air Canada Aeroplan and using them to fly with their partner airlines, such as Emirates, Singapore Airlines, or Air Vistara.
