My Puerto Rican adventure, from mountaintop to seaside

During my time at TPG, I have often found myself questioning the nature of my job and how I ended up in this position. This feeling was particularly strong during a recent experience in Puerto Rico, where I found myself pondering the significance of my work while exploring the breathtaking landscapes of the island.

My journey began in New York City, where I was feeling the effects of the approaching winter season. However, I had a secret plan that would transport me from the cold streets of Brooklyn to the tropical paradise of Puerto Rico. Génesis Yamille, a Puerto Rican travel content creator and friend of TPG, had invited me to experience the adventure activities and natural beauty of her home island. Though initially hesitant due to the busy time of year, I soon realized that Puerto Rico offered a diverse range of experiences for all types of travelers.

After a quick flight to San Juan, I found myself in the warm embrace of the Caribbean sun. As an American citizen, I did not need a passport to enter Puerto Rico, which meant I could bypass long passport control lines and customs forms. Within minutes of landing, I was on my way, ready to embark on a day filled with adventure.

My first stop was Hacienda 8A, a family-run horse farm located near El Yunque National Forest. Surrounded by lush greenery and dotted with over 30 horses, the farm immediately made an impression. Here, I met Génesis, the owner of Hacienda 8A, and our trusty steeds for the day. After a safety briefing and some equine training, we set off on a horseback ride through rolling hills and breezy meadows. Our journey culminated in reaching a mountain peak, where we were rewarded with stunning views of Puerto Rico’s countryside. In just a few hours, I had traded the concrete jungle for a real-life tropical paradise.

Next, we made our way to Hacienda Campo Rico, an adventure playground offering activities such as archery tag, all-terrain vehicle tours, and a zip line course. Our mission was to enjoy a unique mojito at the treehouse bar located at the end of the zip line course. After a safety briefing and an exhilarating ATV ride, we embarked on the zip line adventure, soaring through the air and taking in panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. The experience was a thrilling mix of adrenaline and awe, leaving me ready for whatever Génesis had planned next.

After a restful night’s sleep, Génesis took me to Mar Chiquita, a local favorite beach just a short drive from Old San Juan. This hidden gem features a crystal-clear cove surrounded by dramatic rock formations, creating a natural pool shielded from the ocean’s waves. We arrived early in the morning and had the beach to ourselves, allowing us to fully appreciate the beauty and tranquility of the spot. As we relaxed on the shore, sipping virgin pina coladas and digging our feet into the sand, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of peace and contentment.

Our final adventure took us to Canon Blanco, where we met our guide from Nativos Eco Tours. The hike downhill through lush vegetation led us to the edge of a canyon, where the landscape transformed into a stunning contrast of tan sandstone and vibrant green valleys. The bottom of the canyon was adorned with flowing water, ranging from turbulent white rapids to serene pools. It was a sight that felt otherworldly, like stepping onto the surface of Mars within the heart of Puerto Rico’s forest.

As I reflected on my time in Puerto Rico, I realized that my job at TPG had brought me to this incredible place. It was through the opportunity to explore and share the wonders of travel that I found myself in such a beautiful setting. The experiences I had in Puerto Rico reminded me of the power of travel to transport us from our everyday lives and immerse us in new and awe-inspiring environments. It also reinforced the importance of embracing adventure and stepping outside of our comfort zones.

Puerto Rico is a destination that offers something for everyone, whether it’s horseback riding through rolling hills, soaring through the air on a zip line, or simply relaxing on the beach. It is a place where the natural beauty and vibrant culture combine to create a truly unforgettable experience. My time in Puerto Rico was a reminder of the incredible opportunities and experiences that await us when we open ourselves up to the wonders of the world.
