After a three-year and $1.2 billion overhaul, the hotel has been transformed into a modernized version of its former self. The renovation was led by Hong Kong-born designer Chi Wing Lo, who aimed to emphasize the Regent brand’s principles of “Beauty of Contrasts” and “Personal Havens.” The result is a stunning hotel that offers breathtaking views of the Hong Kong skyline and a range of dining options.
The Regent Hong Kong first opened its doors in 1980 as a Regent hotel but later became an InterContinental in 2001. However, talks of restoring the hotel to its original Regent branding began in 2018 after IHG Hotels & Resorts acquired a majority stake in Regent Hotels & Resorts. The hotel’s ownership group, led by Gaw Capital, invested heavily in the renovation and reflagging of the property, which closed in 2020 and reopened in November 2023.
One of the standout features of the Regent Hong Kong is its location on the northern shoreline of Victoria Harbour on the Kowloon Peninsula. The hotel is surrounded by other deluxe hotels and is in close proximity to popular attractions such as the K11 Musea shopping mall and the Hong Kong Museum of Art. The famous Star Ferry Pier is also just a five-minute walk away, providing easy access to the city’s Mass Transit Railway subway network.
The renovated Regent Hong Kong exudes modern luxury while still maintaining an air of elegance. The hotel’s design, guided by Chi Wing Lo, incorporates elements of contrast, with black African granite floors complementing cream carpeting and blonde wood. The lobby features 16 illuminated glass panels, creating a refined ambiance at eye level. Guest rooms and suites are designed to be intimate and secluded, with private seating areas and picture windows that offer stunning views of the city and Victoria Harbour.
The rooms at the Regent Hong Kong are minimalist yet comfortable, with a focus on maximizing the views. The King Classic Harbour View room that I stayed in during the grand reopening festivities was spacious and well-appointed. The design incorporated various wood grains and stone, creating a sense of tranquility and luxury. The highlight of the room was the daybed and soaking tub, both of which offered breathtaking views of the cityscape.
While my stay at the Regent Hong Kong was complimentary, booking a stay at the hotel can be done directly through the IHG website. Room rates start at $440 per night, or 70,000 IHG One Rewards points, depending on the type of room and availability. The hotel is not currently listed on the American Express Fine Hotels + Resorts program, but it can be booked through the Capital One Premier Collection, which offers similar prices and benefits.
Overall, my experience at the Regent Hong Kong was exceptional. The hotel’s renovation has breathed new life into this iconic property, and it is now a must-visit destination for luxury travelers.
