Wyndham Alltra Cancun review: Great for families and budget-minded couples

Cancun has long been a favorite destination for travelers seeking a tropical getaway. With its beautiful beaches, sunny weather, and a wide range of accommodation options, it’s no wonder that this Mexican city attracts visitors from all over the world. From all-inclusive resorts to luxury hotels and party-centric resorts, Cancun offers something for every type of traveler.

As a travel journalist with over 25 years of experience, I have stayed in various types of accommodations. However, I had never been drawn to the all-inclusive resort experience. I had preconceived notions of non-stop partying and crowded water parks, which kept me away from these types of resorts. But I wanted to challenge my perspective, so I booked a stay at the Wyndham Alltra Cancun to see what the all-inclusive experience was all about.

The Wyndham Alltra brand is relatively new to the all-inclusive resort scene. It launched its first three resorts in Mexico, including Wyndham Alltra Cancun, in 2022. The brand aims to provide a reasonably priced all-inclusive vacation for singles, couples, and families. The Wyndham Alltra Cancun, previously known as Panama Jack Cancun Resort, underwent a rebranding before its opening, which included room updates and refreshing some public areas.

One of the things that struck me about the resort was the consistently excellent customer service. The staff was friendly, welcoming, and always ready to assist. Each encounter with the resort employees left me with a positive impression. They greeted guests with a hand on their hearts and a smile, which added a personal touch to the experience.

While Wyndham Alltra Cancun is touted as a family-friendly all-inclusive, it doesn’t detract from couples or solo travelers’ experience. The resort offers a pirate-themed splash park, a designated family pool, and a robust kids’ club. However, these amenities didn’t diminish the enjoyment of my stay as a couple. Solo travelers will also find plenty to enjoy at the resort.

When it comes to booking a stay at Wyndham Alltra Cancun, using a Wyndham Rewards cobranded credit card or a general travel rewards credit card is the best option. I booked directly with the property using my Chase Sapphire Preferred card. The rates for a two-night stay in early December started at $751 based on double occupancy, but they can vary. The resort doesn’t charge a resort fee, but guests are required to pay an environmental tax per room per night.

Getting to the resort is relatively easy as it is located in Cancun’s Hotel Zone, about a 25-minute drive from Cancun International Airport (CUN). While the resort doesn’t provide complimentary airport transfers, taxis are readily available outside the resort. I recommend opting for a taxi rather than booking transportation through the concierge, as it is more cost-effective.

Checking in at Wyndham Alltra Cancun was a smooth process. We arrived in the morning, and although our room wasn’t ready, we were given all-inclusive wristbands, which allowed us to enjoy the resort’s amenities and services while we waited. The lobby was welcoming, and the staff made us feel at home.

During check-in, we received black wristbands, which we were later told were VIP bands. Although we hadn’t upgraded or booked anything extra, we were offered a free excursion or cabana rental. However, it wasn’t clear how we earned this VIP status. We declined the offer as we had already booked a cabana and didn’t have enough time for an excursion. Later, we learned that VIP status is granted to guests who book a premium suite (sixth floor) or higher without attending an information session. VIP status comes with various perks, including access to the Alltra VIP Lounge on the sixth floor.

The rooms at Wyndham Alltra Cancun are spacious and offer a range of amenities. Standard rooms feature a separate sitting area, a furnished terrace or balcony, a minifridge, and other in-room amenities. Suite options are extensive, including junior suites, master suites, family suites, and presidential suites. Suites offer additional amenities such as private balconies with hammocks, in-room hot tubs, and personal beach cabanas. Suite guests also have exclusive access to the Alltra VIP Lounge.

During our stay, we booked a premium junior suite, which had a Palm Beach resort vibe with its marble tile floors and grayish-beige furnishings. The sitting area was spacious, and the closet held robes and slippers. The vanity space was separate from the bathroom and shower area, but it was open to the rest of the room, allowing light to spill in. The double vanity area provided ample space for personal toiletries. The room also had a coffee maker, ironing facilities, and a stocked minifridge with complimentary beverages.

Overall, our experience at Wyndham Alltra Cancun was positive. The resort offered a range of amenities, excellent customer service, and comfortable accommodations. While it may not be everyone’s cup of tequila, the all-inclusive experience at Wyndham Alltra Cancun is worth considering for those seeking a tropical getaway with the convenience of having everything included in one package. Whether you’re a couple, a family, or a solo traveler, you’ll likely find something to enjoy at this resort in Cancun.
